Most athletes have plenty of motivation and confidence. More often, it's the pressure of competition that distracts them and affects their focus and performance.
This blog helps athletes and performers build mindfulness as an essential mental skill. Like strength and speed, mindfulness can be trained to boost performance. It's not about relaxation, spirituality, or passive meditation. Instead, it's about staying focused, resilient, and consistent when it matters most. Mindfulness is another key part of an athlete's toolkit, essential for reaching one's best in competition.
Who This Blog Is For
This space is for:
Competitive athletes (high school, collegiate, semi-professional) who want to enhance their ability to perform consistently even under pressure.
Performers who need to stay consistent under pressure so they can do their best when it matters. Coaches and parents who want to support mental fitness and help athletes build resilience without adding extra stress.
Who I Am
I’m Kojo Arhin, Psy.D., as a performance psychologist, I help athletes and performers build the mental skills they need to achieve at the highest levels.
My work focuses on helping individuals:
Stay present under pressure
Respond effectively to mistakes
Reduce overthinking without losing competitiveness
Separate self-worth from performance outcomes
Rather than only teaching athletes to calm down or think positively, I focus on helping them develop attentional control, psychological flexibility, and the ability to perform in any situation. For example, using a simple cue like 'focus-breath-target' during a game can help athletes quickly refocus and stay composed. These short mantras make mental skills practical and valuable on the field.
My Approach to Mindfulness
Here, mindfulness isn't about slowing down or getting rid of nerves.
It is the ability to:
Notice what's happening internally
Stay connected to the task at hand
Choose effective responses instead of reactive ones
With the right training, mindfulness helps athletes compete at full intensity without getting thrown off by distracting thoughts or strong emotions.
